Quatre des plus grands noms du commerce de viande et de cuir ont fait un grand pas le 5 octobre pour une meilleure protection de la forêt amazonienne. Bertin (premier exportateur de cuir au monde), JBS-Friboi (premier producteur mondial de viande bovine), Marfrig (quatrième négociant mondial de viande bovine) et Minerva (troisième exportateur brésilien de bÅ“uf) ont annoncé qu’ils ne se fourniront plus auprès d’élevages brésiliens établis sur des terrains issus de la déforestation. Cette annonce est le résultat de dix ans de campagnes de Greenpeace contre la destruction de l’Amazonie.
Un des temps forts de cette campagne avait été en juin dernier la publication d’un rapport de Greenpeace sur la déforestation en Amazonie. Ce rapport montrait, après trois ans d’enquête, que l’élevage était désormais responsable de 80% de cette déforestation et que tout une filière était à réformer. Nous dénoncions les industriels (Bertin, Marfrig, etc.), les distributeurs (Carrefour, Wal-Mart, etc.) et des marques textiles comme Adidas, Nike et Timberland. En se fournissant auprès d’éleveurs brésiliens sans s’interroger sur le rôle de ceux-ci dans la déforestation, ces grands noms se faisaient complices de la destruction de l’Amazonie. Nous leurs demandions donc de mettre en place une chaîne de traçabilité complète du cuir et de la viande.
